Due to rain tonight’s game has been postponed to July 10th at 7:05EST. The game went to the top of third (Yankees batting) with two outs and no one on base before the rain started to come down. Current score is 3-1, Yanks, thanks to two doubles and a triple in the 1st. One of those doubles is by Derek Jeter, who now has a hit in 14 straight games. Moose is looking good so far, with 2 Ks and only three hits allowed in the first two innings. That’s about it for the action tonight, we will have to wait a couple of weeks to see how it all unfolds.

Joba ChamberlainJoba Chamberlain effectively shut up all of his critics after another good performance as starter for the Yankees. Who said that moving him to the rotation would be a bad idea? There were plenty, but for now all we will hear from them on the issue is silence. Joba has effectively transitioned to the starting role and I think even his harshest critics now realize that this kid is really something spectacular. And the dominance is only beginning…

Last night’s game was the first in which the Nebraska native didn’t have a pitch count limitation. Without the restriction he will have one less thing on his mind and he will be able to concentrate more on doing what he does best: pitching well. The match against the Pirates also helped Joba get his first win as a starter, another hurdle which he no longer needs to be questioned or worried about.

In his five starts for the Yankees, Joba has been phenomenal, with a 2.03 ERA since he moved up and 26 Ks in 25 innings pitched. He has regularly hit 99 mph on the radar gun and his control seems to be back after a shaky first couple of starts. That’s really a small issue though, considering that it takes time for relievers to ease into a starting role, and such issues are ordinary. As time passes we can expect Chamberlain to get even more comfortable, but I don’t know if the stats can really get any better because they have already been simply amazing. His bb/ip ratio is sure to go down, the only reason it being a bit high is because of the aforementioned transitional side-effects.

Simply put, Joba Chamberlain is going to be one heck of a pitcher for the Yankees. We all knew it would happen, but seeing it actually happen is a lot more than just speculating about it. For the Yankees he will be a potent weapon and for our opponents a nightmare. We are on the verge of an exciting era in Yankee baseball. I for one can’t wait for his future starts.

Both teams have won a game in the series rather easily. Tonight will be the rubber match of a three game set between the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The first pitch is schedule for 7:05pm at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

Mike Mussina will take the hill for the Yankees. Moose is 10-5 on the year with a 3.93 era. He is the winningest pitcher against the opposite league since interleague play began in 1997. Mike is 21-13 against the NL, but is coming off a loss to the Reds last week. Mussina, who is originally from Pennsylvania, has never pitched in Pittsburgh, but is 1-0 in his career against the Pirates, throwing a complete game shut out in his only start.

For the Pirates- Paul Maholm will take the hill. The lefthander has won three straight decisions and has not lost a game since May 20th. Maholm is 3-0 with a 3.61 in his last six starts, and is also 4-1 at home this season. In his interleague career, Paul has a record of 2-4 with a 4.42 era.

The Yankees come in 42-36, third in the AL East, and are one game over .500 on the road, at 20-19. The Pirates sit at 37-42, for fourth in the NL Central, and are playing at a 24-17 clip at home.

Should be a nice ball game. I say Mussina pitches another gem against the Pirates, and the Yankees win! The YAAAAAAANKEEEEEES WIN!

  1. Damon, CF
  2. Jeter, SS
  3. Abreu, RF
  4. Rodriguez, 3B
  5. Giambi, 1B
  6. Cano, 2B
  7. Cabrera, CF
  8. Molina, C
  9. Mussina, P

Joba Chamberlain continued his brilliant pitching on the mound Wednesday night as the Yankees blanked the Pirates, 10-0, to take the second of a three game set in Pittsburgh. Chamberlain threw 6.2 innings, allowing 6 hits, no runs, walking one guy and striking out seven. He is now 3-1 on the season, and has lowered his sparkling ERA once again.

Zach Duke was roughed up for Pittsburgh, and fell to 4-5 on the year, going just 5 innings, allowing 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned, while walking 2, and not striking out anyone.

The Yankees pounded out 16 hits, and were led by Derek Jeter’s 3-3 night, extending his hitting streak to 13 games. Jason Giambi got the offense started right away in the first inning with a fielders choice RBI as well as another run scored on an error. Giambi also drove home the third run of the night, singling Jeter home in the third inning.

Robinson Cano and Bobby Abreu added solo homeruns in the 6th, and Abreu got an RBI double later in the ball game. Melky Cabrera also drove home a late run for the Yankees 10-run outburst. Jeter, Abreu and Cano all picked up 3 hits, while all the offensive starters picked up atleast one base hit tonight.

This win puts the Yankees at 42-36 for the season, remaining 5.5 games back of Boston, who blanked Arizona 5-0. We still remain the same number of games behind Tampa Bay as well after they blasted Florida.

Tomorrow night’s game will feature Moose, who will face the Pirates’ Paul Maholm. Mussina is 10-5 with a 3.93 era this season, and 1-0 with a complete game in his career against the Pirates. Maholm is 5-5 on the season, and 0-1 in his career against the Yankees.

The Yankees look to get back on the winning track today, after the 12-5 drubbing at the hands of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday.

Yankees 41-36(19-19 on the road) will have Joba Chamberlain on the hill tonight. Joba is 1-2 overall this season, with a sparkling 2.36 era. In his last two starts, both have been well pitched games, but neither have been wins. On June 13th, we went 6 innings, allowing 6 hits, and just 1 run in a 2-1 Yankee win over the Astros. Then, in his last start against San Diego Joba threw 5.2 innings, allowing just 4 hits, and 1 run. Joba has only faced one current Pirate batter, and that is Jason Michaels, who is 0-1 in his career off Chamberlain.

For the Pirates, the tough, young lefty Zach Duke will be throwing. Duke is 4-4 on the year with a 3.91 era. Lately Duke has pitched very well. His last two starts have both been no decisions, but he has not lost in the month of June. In his last four starts, he has went 6 innings, or more, allowing no more than 4 runs. Duke is 4-2 at home this year with a 3.18 era.

This could be a tough game tonight. If Duke is on, the Pirates will be tough to hit. We are going to need much better pitching then we got yesterday. And with Joba pitching, we will have to use our bullpen. Let’s hope we only need them for 3 innings- no more. Also, let’s be patient against Duke, and I think we’ll get to him!

Good luck Yankees! Time for another winning streak!

Here is tonight’s winning lineup:

  1. Cabrera CF
  2. Jeter SS
  3. Abreu RF
  4. Rodriguez 3B
  5. Giambi 1B
  6. Posada C
  7. Cano 2B
  8. Christian LF
  9. Chamberlain P

What an ugly Tuesday night for the New York Yankees. The Pittsburgh Pirates banged out 19 hits, and scored 12 runs, in a 12-5 rout over the Yankees. The news gets worse for the Yankees, as Boston and Tampa Bay also won, causing the Yanks to fall a game behind each of those teams in the AL East standings.

Freddie Sanchez got the scoring started in the first with an RBI single. Adam LaRoche singled in another run, and after one inning, it was quickly 2-0 Pirates. Jason Bay then doubled in the third run of the game in the third inning, before the major onslaught began.

Pittsburgh scored 2 in the 4th, 2 in the 5th, 2 in the 7th, and 3 in the 8th to complete their 12 run game. The Yankees got a tally in the 4th, and grabbed a pair in both the 6th and the 9th, but not nearly enough.

Robinson Cano came away with 3 hits for the Yankees raising his average to .235.

Darrell Rasner was not sharp for the Yankees, as he only went 5 innings, allowing 10 hits, and 7 earned runs. He is now 4-5 on the season. For the Pirates, Tom Gorzelanny evened his record up to 6-6, by going 6 innings in which he gave up 6 hits and 3 runs.

Tomorrow’s game will start at 7:05 and feature Jaba Chamberlain for the Yankees. He will take on the Pirates young fireballer Zach Duke.

This isn’t exactly related to the Yankees or the MLB for that matter, but I think it is still worth posting. It is a video by the Onion, in which they mock the NHL and how it doesn’t really compare to the other professional sports in America. I actually like the NHL, but this video is funny nonetheless. Just sit back and enjoy:

Yes, that’s right, at this moment the Yankees are only 4.5 games behind division leaders, Boston. The Red Sox lost to the D’ Backs last night and the Yankees had an off day so we moved up by .5 game. We are only 3.5 games behind the Rays for second place.

The Yankees will start a series against the Pirates tonight, so we should win atleast a couple of games against them. Meanwhile, the Red Sox still have two games left against potent Arizona, who’s pitching continues to dominate. This bodes well for the Yankees because the BoSox are bound to lose atleast one more (hopefully) and if the Yanks can keep playing well we will be able to bring the standings even closer.

Tampa will start a three-game series against state-rivals, the Marlins, tonight. The fish have been playing well thus far this season, but I wouldn’t count on them beating the Rays (although it still is possible) due to the lack of pitching. At this point I am not really worried about the Rays though because as long as the Yankees keep winning we will be fine.

The point of this post was just to show that in the past two weeks a lot has changed for the Bombers and good things are coming. Just keep having faith and remember that it’s never over ’til it’s over, atleast for the Yankees.

This post is part of the MLB Draft 2008 get-to-know the draftees series.

Luke Anders was chosen as the 500th pick overall in the 16th round of the 2008 MLB draft. Anders, a first basemen out of Texas A&M University, is 6’6 and weighs 225lbs. Luke attended high school at Texas A&M Consolidated school.

During the 2008 season, Luke hit .348, mashing out 13 homeruns and driving in 50 runs. His slugging percentage for the season was .652. During his sophomore season he was selected on the first team all Big Twelve team as a DH, hitting .336 with 11 homeruns, and 46 rbi’s.

Anders looks to be a power hitting first basemen, that has potential to be strictly a designated hitter, if need be. Anders fielding is above average, and his speed is just average, so DH may be a good fit for Luke.

Michael Jones, who was a star receiver on the Arizona State University football team, was drafted as an outfielder by the New York Yankees. Jones, a native of Sugarland Texas, played his high school athletics at Fort Bend Austin High School.

During Michael’s freshman year, he hit .313 for the Sun Devils, playing in only ten games, after a late start due to football. His sophomore season, Jones hit .319, and on April 25 was a homerun shy of the cycle against the University of Hawaii. His junior season, he struggled with the bat, but his defensive presence, along with his quick feet make him a valuable asset in the Yankees farm system.

Jones says Ken Griffey Jr. is the baseball player who looks up to most. Let’s hope Michael gets the opportunity to play in the same game with Griffey Jr. before he retires!

Raymond Kruml, a speedy centerfielder out of the University of South Alabama, was chosen by the Yankees in the 11th round of the 2008 MLB Draft. Ray stands at 6’0 and weighs just 185lbs. He bats left and throws right. Kruml grew up in a Chicago suburb of Wheaton, IL.

Kruml hit .350 for the Jaguars of USA in 2008, and had an on base percentage of .421. He also added 8 homeruns, 21 doubles, and knocked in 46 runs. He has great speed, and looks to be a good lead-off hitter in the future.

His coach at USA had this to say about Richard: “He has outstanding speed, he can steal bases and he reads pitchers well.” Sounds like a good catch for the Yankees in the 11th round!

As the Yankees take Monday off, they prepare for a three game set with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Darrell Rasner, the 6′3 righthander from Carson City NV, will make the start for the Yankees. Rasner is 4-4 this season in eight starts, with an ERA at a respectable 3.64. Rasner has never faced the Pirates, and the only two Pirate hitters that have seen him are Jason Michaels, who is 1-2 in his career, and Adam LaRoche, who is 0-1. Rasner is 1-3 this year on the road, so it will be a huge test to see if he can shake the road woes, and find a way to get the Yankees another win. The Yankees as a team are 19-18 on the road, while the Pirates have played good ball at home, going 23-16 in their 39 home games.

For the Pirates, lefthander Tom Gorzelanny gets the start. Tom, a 25 year old from Evergreen Park Illinois will be making his 15th start of the season. Gorzelanny has had a  rough go of it in 2008, going 5-6 on the year, but a high era mark of 6.59. His problem thus far has been walks, as he has allowed 50 free passes in 71 innings. Gorzelanny is 21-22 in his career. He has made one start against the Yankees in his career getting a no decision, and going 6.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and 4 runs.  Gorzelanny is 4-1 this season at home. Hideki Matsui has had the most success against the lefthander, going 2-3 with a 2 run homerun.

Should be a good pitching matchup, and if the kid Rasner pitches well, I like the Yankees chances. We will try to have the lineups for you, before the game on Tuesday! Until then, hope you enjoy the offday, and GO YANKEES!
