Mets win first of two
Filed Under Analysis, Game Reviews | Leave a Comment
The New York Mets pounded out 15 runs on 14 hits to win the first of a doubleheader against the Yankees. Dan Giese fell to 1-3 on the season, by going only 4 innings, allowing 5 hits and 6 runs, all earned. The three bullpen pitchers for the Yankees also did not fare well, as all four pitchers on the night gave up atleast a run.
The Mets got the scoring started early with a David Wright RBI in the first, which was countered by Jason Giambi’s RBI single. The Mets then scored twice in the third on a Carlos Beltran two-run bomb. The Yankees bounced back with three and took a 4-3 third inning lead. Rodriguez, Cano, and Betemit all drove in runs in that inning.
The Mets then added 3 in the fifth, 5 in the sixth, and 4 in the eighth, for the 15 run outburst. Carlos Delgado went deep twice, and drove in a record 9 RBIs for the Mets. David Wright and Carlos Beltran each drove in three runs, making up the Mets total of fifteen.
For the Yankees Alex Rodriguez went 3 for 4, raising his average to .332 on the season.
Mike Pelfrey picked up the win for the Mets.

Joba looks good, Yanks blank Bucs

Joba Chamberlain continued his brilliant pitching on the mound Wednesday night as the Yankees blanked the Pirates, 10-0, to take the second of a three game set in Pittsburgh. Chamberlain threw 6.2 innings, allowing 6 hits, no runs, walking one guy and striking out seven. He is now 3-1 on the season, and has lowered his sparkling ERA once again.
Zach Duke was roughed up for Pittsburgh, and fell to 4-5 on the year, going just 5 innings, allowing 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned, while walking 2, and not striking out anyone.
The Yankees pounded out 16 hits, and were led by Derek Jeter’s 3-3 night, extending his hitting streak to 13 games. Jason Giambi got the offense started right away in the first inning with a fielders choice RBI as well as another run scored on an error. Giambi also drove home the third run of the night, singling Jeter home in the third inning.
Robinson Cano and Bobby Abreu added solo homeruns in the 6th, and Abreu got an RBI double later in the ball game. Melky Cabrera also drove home a late run for the Yankees 10-run outburst. Jeter, Abreu and Cano all picked up 3 hits, while all the offensive starters picked up atleast one base hit tonight.
This win puts the Yankees at 42-36 for the season, remaining 5.5 games back of Boston, who blanked Arizona 5-0. We still remain the same number of games behind Tampa Bay as well after they blasted Florida.
Tomorrow night’s game will feature Moose, who will face the Pirates’ Paul Maholm. Mussina is 10-5 with a 3.93 era this season, and 1-0 with a complete game in his career against the Pirates. Maholm is 5-5 on the season, and 0-1 in his career against the Yankees.

Yankees Win!
Filed Under Analysis | Leave a Comment
Behind an impressive performance by Andy Pettitte, who went 6 innings, allowing just four hits, walking two and striking out four, the Yankees knocked off the Reds 4-1 on Sunday, to salvage one win in the three game series. After Pettitte, Edwar Ramirez threw a hitless seventh, Kyle Farnsworth was touched up by a Ken Griffey Jr. homer in the eighth, and Mariano Rivera went 1.1 innings, allowing 2 hits, but slamming the door for a 4-1 win. The win was Pettitte’s 8th, and the save was Rivera’s 21st.
Johnny Cueto was the hardluck loser for the Reds. The young righthander falls to 5-8, after going 5 innings, allowing 4 hits, and just 1 run, while striking out 7.
Robinson Cano got the scoring started in the 5th inning, with a sacrifice fly that scored Giambi, to put the Yankees ahead 1-0. After Jeter and Matsui reached base, Jason Giambi doubled them both in, in the 6th inning to make the score 3-0. That double would be enough to win it for the Yanks. Jorge Pasada would add a fourth run in the game on another double, and put the Yankees ahead 4-0. That score stayed in tack until the 8th when Griffey Jr. hit the solo homerun.
The win for the Yankees moved their season record to 41-35 overall, while the Reds fell to 35-42. The Yankees kept pace with the Red Sox, who are tied with the Cardinals at 3-3 currently.
The Yankees will take Monday off, before heading to Pittsbugh for three games starting on Tuesday. After their trip to Pittsburgh, the Yankees will come back home and play the Mets in the inner city rivalry between both the New York teams.
Darrell Rasner will take the mound for the Yankees on Tuesday, to face the Pirates lefty Tom Gorzelanny.

Crazy Conseco is Back
Filed Under Analysis, News, Speculation | Leave a Comment
Just when all the PED talk seemed to have gone away, it has jumped to the top of the headlines once more. I knew it was inevitable, but its still disappointing. Anyway, the story this time is thanks to crazy Jose Canseco and his new personal rant book, Vindicated.
A few people managed to get copies early, before the book officially goes on sale April 1st. At first it was some Boston columnist, by the name of Joe Lavin who posted about and started a cohort of responses and other posts on the subject. Deadspin later posted some excerpts from the book, confirming that Lavin had the book. You can head over to the site (just click the link) and read some of the excerpts for yourself. The main targets of this book seem to be Roger Clemens, Alex Rodriguez, and Magglio Ordonez. I’m not going to discuss the Clemens situation because that has already been beat and buried to the ground thanks to Mitchell madness.
As for Ordonez, Canseco said that he personally injected the outfielder. Obviously there are those who argue that he is guilty and those that say he is innocent. I really don’t know what to believe about him at the moment, especially due to the lack of information thus far. Deadspin’s excerpts mostly focus of A. Rod and I haven’t seen much more about what Canseco said about Ordonez, so I’m not going to say much on that either. In my mind he is still innocent because just knowing that Canseco said he is guilty doesn’t sway my mind a bit, since I don’t have much if any respect for Canseco and I don’t find him to be a good source.
What I am more concerned about at the moment is Canseco’s accusations of A. Rod. Again, I think Canseco is just a pathetic ex ballplayer who got caught and is now out to get others, just to make himself feel better. Having a personal vendetta like that isn’t exactly a good quality when investigating this sort of thing and I think Canseco just lucked out his first time around, with Juiced. Hopefully Vindicated will be the joke that Juiced was supposed to be and Canseco can stop writing these diaries he calls books.
Looking at the excerpts posted by Deadspin, it really looks like Canseco’s new book won’t be as credible as his first. As Ben from River Ave. Blues said,
“While the passages are in the book, Canseco’s words come across as jealous, bitter rantings. Vindicated will be no Juiced”
I agree with this 100%. The book just seems like it is a 14 year old girl ranting. Canseco talks about how he didn’t mention A. Rod. in the first book because he hated him for apparently trying to get with his wife. He also hates him because “he has no morals.” That is quite a statement coming from a guy who popped pills like there was no tomorrow to get big. Anyway, Canseco said that he introduced Rodriguez to a few steroid dealers. He said that he didn’t see whether or not A. Rod. actually took steroids, but he was sure and still is sure because of one time when he passed A. Rod. on the street and thought that he “looked buff.” What a load of bull. Canseco even admitted that he isn’t sure whether or not A. Rod has taken steroids; combine that with the fact that he hates A. Rod. and his case basically falls apart.
Jose Canseco is just tarnishing his own name further with this book because with most of his accusations he is personally involved in one way or another. He is making himself out to be the king of steroids (if he isn’t already). Forget Bonds and Clemens, I think Canseco should be the eternal steroids poster boy. It will be interesting to see how the media reacts to the book once it is officially released in a few days. Hopefully this will be the end of Canseco and he can go into the corner of his gym and cry his writing career away.

Booming Business

Some economy experts may argue that the United States is heading towards or is already in a recession, but the Yankees are in anything but a slowdown at the moment. In fact, it is quite the opposite. Today the Yankees announced that they have already sold a record-breaking 3.8 million tickets for the 2008 season! That is 400,000 more than they had sold at this time last season. And all this with the highest ticket prices in Yankee history (they are the highest whether or not you consider inflation as well.) It is crazy, but then again it is also history. It is the last year at the great Yankee Stadium and it is something which most Yankee fans, including me, would pay a lot to be a part of. No one is really happy with the price hikes, but when it comes to the facts the truth is that baseball is a business.

I think it is pretty obvious that this will be the eighth year in a row where home attendance grows for the Yanks. At current rates this will also be the most profitable season for any baseball team ever. This will also be good for the sport, as the Yankees get more press coverage. Other teams may also benefit due to the revenue sharing agreement, so that should make some owners happy (cough -Marlins owner- cough) This season will certainly be a memorable one for everyone including fans, team owners, and the MLB.
