The Cliff Lee sweepstakes is in full gear as several teams have expressed interest in the pitcher. The Yankees and the Rangers are the favorites and Texas has basically admitted that they won’t be able to match the Yanks financially. Instead, they are trying to play the “Texas is better” card in trying to retain Lee, but according to some reports today, that might not work with Lee. That is of course good news for the Yankees- we can definitely use this guy, especially if Petitte retires. C.C. and Lee would provide probably the best 1-2 punch in the bigs and with Hughes and Burnett in 2 of the bottom three it instantly solidifies the rotation even if Petitte doesn’t stay. Burnett is a big question and Hughes still has some proving to do, but they would likely keep those spots. Personally, I think Hughes is only headed up from here. Burnett will likely be sporadic as he always has been but that might be okay if he is pushed down in the rotation. Stay tuned for updates on the dealings as we break the latest in Yankees news.
