Joba Chamberlain continued his brilliant pitching on the mound Wednesday night as the Yankees blanked the Pirates, 10-0, to take the second of a three game set in Pittsburgh. Chamberlain threw 6.2 innings, allowing 6 hits, no runs, walking one guy and striking out seven. He is now 3-1 on the season, and has lowered his sparkling ERA once again.
Zach Duke was roughed up for Pittsburgh, and fell to 4-5 on the year, going just 5 innings, allowing 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned, while walking 2, and not striking out anyone.
The Yankees pounded out 16 hits, and were led by Derek Jeter’s 3-3 night, extending his hitting streak to 13 games. Jason Giambi got the offense started right away in the first inning with a fielders choice RBI as well as another run scored on an error. Giambi also drove home the third run of the night, singling Jeter home in the third inning.
Robinson Cano and Bobby Abreu added solo homeruns in the 6th, and Abreu got an RBI double later in the ball game. Melky Cabrera also drove home a late run for the Yankees 10-run outburst. Jeter, Abreu and Cano all picked up 3 hits, while all the offensive starters picked up atleast one base hit tonight.
This win puts the Yankees at 42-36 for the season, remaining 5.5 games back of Boston, who blanked Arizona 5-0. We still remain the same number of games behind Tampa Bay as well after they blasted Florida.
Tomorrow night’s game will feature Moose, who will face the Pirates’ Paul Maholm. Mussina is 10-5 with a 3.93 era this season, and 1-0 with a complete game in his career against the Pirates. Maholm is 5-5 on the season, and 0-1 in his career against the Yankees.
